Privacy is another factor, but this is easy just make sure that your personal details are limited to an email address at first, sites that publish full details should be avoided.

When meeting someone for the first time, make sure that it is in a public place, preferably in the daytime or somewhere that is well lit. Make your own way there and back home, never accept a lift from your date.

Always tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you are expecting to get home, never leave your drink unattended and if you feel threatened in any way, make your excuses and leave.

Following these rules will allow you to enjoy the online dating scene and hopefully meet the person who is right for you.
