Online dating should be fun, but sometimes it can end in disaster if the rules of safe dating are not followed.

It is all too easy for unsuspecting online daters to fall into the traps that the more experienced online daters who take advantage of those people who are new to the scene.

There are plenty of rules around which new users can follow and below are just a few which may help:

Know what you are looking for
Write a good profile
Start to mingle in the chat rooms
Talk to people through IM or email
Be confident
Have a deadline for when you want the first date

These rules are not set in stone and they are definitely not a guarantee against someone trying it on, however caution should be taken when contacting people through the internet.
